Gracie's story...
At 17 weeks we were given the results that Gracie had a 1 in 50 risk factor of having downs syndrome, both my husband Paul and I decided not to have the amnio offered as we didn't want to risk misscarriage after already suffering a missed misscarriage in 2006. Instead we read as much literature as we possibly could to prepare us just in case Gracie did have downs syndrome.
Then at our 20 week scan it was picked up that there was a problem with her heart, we then had to see a foetal heart specialist at the childrens hospital who confirmed that Gracie had complete AVSD which is a hole in the heart caused because the top two chambers had formed as one.
We were then told this is common in babies with downs syndrome. This to us confirmed that Gracie did have downs syndrome, so we accepted this because no matter what she is our very much wanted beautiful little baby.
We carried on having growth scans, and we were told she would be small, then we had the 34 week scan and were told everything was looking normal.
Gracie was due on 1st October, on Sunday 27th September I realised I hadn't felt her move, so went to the hospital on the Monday morning, they checked to listen for her heart beat but couldn't find it, so they done a scan and the doctor told me the hardest words I have every had to hear, that our baby had died.
I was induced later that day and delivered Gracie at 16:24 on Tuesday 29th September 2009 (2 days before her due date) she weighed 4Ib and 1/2oz. Gracie did have Downs Syndrome, and we are so very proud of her.

I heard you crying yesterday,
And felt your heart-sent love.
So I’m sending you this message
Now, from Heaven up above.
You’re wondering if I’ll celebrate
My Birthday (way up here).
I know you’re missing me today
I feel your essence near.
God planned a special day for me,
He told me with a wink.
He’d ordered me a special cake
(It’s Angel food, I think).
Balloons will fill the streets for me,
They float up through the clouds.
And we have lots of friends up here
That make us laugh out loud.
There is a Birthday carousel,
Jewelled horses ride the wind,
With music playing, oh so sweet…
The magic never ends.
I’ve made so many friends, you see
We laugh and play and sing.
We ride our bikes and play jump rope
And sleep in Angel’s wings.
We’ll have our cake and ice cream
And open gifts - SURPRISE!
But we don’t blow out our candles here
Instead, they light the skies.
